PINGERS AND LOCATORS

Teledyne Benthos provides a complete line of proven underwater locator products. Whether your requirements include search and recovery, underwater navigation and tracking, military or special operations, Teledyne Benthos has a solution to suit your needs. Our locator devices fall into two general categories, pingers and transponders.

Pingers are small devices about the size of a flashlight. Once the unit is submerged in water it emits an audible signal (called a ping) continuously for up to 30 days. To locate and recover the pinger, a diver with a handheld device (DPL) is dispatched to "listen" for, and home-in on the device. Shipboard listening devices are available as well (APR).

Transponders, like pingers, are attached to a mooring or other underwater item you wish to retrieve or locate in the future. Unlike a pinger, a transponder remains idle until it is "interrogated" by either a diver (with a DRI) or a shipboard unit. When the transponder is interrogated it transmits range and bearing data. The diver or shipboard unit simply follows (ranges) the signal emitted by the transponder to locate it.

The ELP-362D model of pinger is FAA certified and used on commercial aircraft throughout the world. The unit is mounted on the flight data and cockpit voice recorders or “black boxes” of commercial and military aircraft. The ELP-362D assists in the recovery and investigation of aircraft that have gone down over water. These units are approved by the FAA & CAA under TSO-C121.
